Choosing a wedding photographer is one of the few wedding decisions you’ll still be living with decades from now. The flowers wilt, the cake gets eaten, and the dress goes into storage. The photographs become the version of the day your family returns to for generations.

That’s a remarkable amount of trust to place in a single decision. And yet couples often spend more time choosing a venue than learning how to evaluate the person who will shape how the day is remembered.

The stakes rise further with a destination wedding. You rarely get to meet three or four local photographers for coffee and see how you feel around them. Instead, you’re hiring someone sight unseen, often from another country. You’re trusting them to read light they’ve never shot in and navigate customs they didn’t grow up with, then deliver in one take, with no second day to fix what went wrong.

So what should you actually look for?

Look past the highlight reel to find range

Every accomplished photographer’s portfolio shows their strongest images from many weddings. That tells you their ceiling. What it doesn’t tell you is their floor: how they perform when the light is harsh at 2 pm, the venue is dim, the reception runs late, or a sudden rainstorm rewrites the timeline.

Ask to see a full gallery from a single wedding, start to finish, rather than a curated feed. Consistency across an entire day, not just the golden-hour portraits, is one of the clearest signs of experience.

For a destination wedding, ask what conditions they’ve actually shot in. Tropical sun at noon throws shadows under the eyes that editing only partly fixes. Humidity fogs a lens the moment it leaves an air-conditioned car. Some centuries-old churches don’t allow flash at all. A photographer who has worked in those conditions will talk about them in specifics. One who hasn’t will talk about them in the vague language of a sales page.

Editorial polish and documentary truth don’t have to compete

There’s a longstanding tension in wedding photography between editorial imagery (composed, cinematic, magazine-worthy) and documentary photography, which follows the day as it naturally unfolds. Couples are often made to feel they must choose between the two. I don’t believe they should.

The moments that matter most twenty years from now are rarely only the perfectly posed ones or the purely candid ones. They’re often the moments in between: a real, unposed exchange between a father and daughter, captured with the same intention, composition, and awareness of light as an editorial portrait.

Ask a photographer how they think about that balance. If they only work in one mode, that’s the only kind of memory you’ll end up with.

The skill most couples forget to check for: direction

A luxury wedding photographer does more than react well to what’s happening in front of them. At a 300-person wedding, someone needs to direct family portraits gently and confidently, help a nervous couple feel natural in front of the camera, balance competing priorities, and read the room well enough to know when to step back and let life unfold.

That’s a distinct skill from technical photography, and it usually stays invisible until you’re standing in the middle of your wedding day. Ask how they’d run a first look, or handle twelve family combinations with fifteen minutes of usable light left. Their answer will usually tell you more about their real experience than their portfolio does.

The logistics of trust

On your wedding day, you’ll spend more one-on-one time with your photographer than with almost anyone else. During long stretches, that includes your own partner. That’s why chemistry matters more here than with nearly any other vendor you hire.

Pay attention to how you feel during that first conversation. Are they curious about your story, your family, and what matters to you? Or are they walking you through a script they’ve clearly given before?

The photographs that feel most personal are usually decided before the camera ever comes out. They depend on whether the people in them felt understood by the person holding it.

For destination weddings, ask the unglamorous questions

This is where experience matters most.

Ask about travel logistics, insurance, and backup equipment. Ask whether a second photographer travels with them, and how they get gear through customs in your destination country. Ask, plainly, what happens if a flight is delayed or a suitcase doesn’t arrive. A photographer who has done this before won’t hesitate on any of it. Those who’ve only ever shot locally tend to offer reassurance instead of a real plan.

It’s also worth asking how they work with your planner. The best destination photographers see the planner as a partner, not a competing authority. They coordinate timelines, scout locations together when possible, and value the planner’s read on the day as useful information rather than a second opinion to manage.

Think in decades, not days

My final advice is simple: don’t choose your photographer based on what will look good on Instagram next month. Think about what you’ll want to hold in your hands twenty years from now.

Wedding photographs eventually become something larger than content or documentation. They become part of a family’s visual history: images your children and grandchildren may one day use to understand who you were, who was there, and what it felt like to be together.

The right luxury wedding photographer isn’t necessarily the one with the most followers, or even the one whose portfolio holds the single image you love most. It’s the one whose body of work, consistency, and way of seeing already feel connected to how you want to remember your wedding.

In the end, you’re not just hiring someone to photograph your wedding. You’re choosing how the day will be remembered.
