Smith Farm Gardens Wedding in Connecticut

Smith Farm Gardens Wedding in Connecticut

Kayla and Avery's Smith Farm Gardens wedding was planned entirely by the bride's mom. We’re sharing the story of their personal celebration full of handwritten notes, a ring warming ceremony, and a tent draped in French linens.

Kayla and Avery were married at Smith Farm Gardens, a fifteen-acre estate in East Haddam, Connecticut, built around a lovingly preserved eighteenth-century home. The property is full of personality and charm, with a peaceful orchard, an elegant English garden, and upper and lower gardens full of color, plus a farm stand with an antique copper bar and fountain where guests naturally gather. There's even a three-foot swing tucked into the grounds and a fire pit for later in the evening, so the whole estate feels like somewhere you'd want to spend a long, easy weekend. Shukhrat Kamalov of Kamalov Photography was there with an editorial eye to capture it all, alongside second photographer Rachel and an assistant on drone duty, and what they came home with was a beautiful record of a day built around love and connection.

What makes this wedding extra special is that Kayla's mom planned the whole thing herself. Not a professional planner, not a team of coordinators, but an incredible mom who loves her daughter and son-in-law, and poured hundreds of hours into giving them exactly what they asked for. The wedding was better than they could ever have imagined, and guests kept saying they'd never seen anything quite like. Thanks to the magic touch of a loving mom. The spirit of this day wasn't about impressing anyone, it was about a mother giving her daughter something made entirely of love and care.

The quiet moments and meaningful details

The morning started gently, with Kayla's personal photos, a few with her mom, and then the bridesmaids joining in, while Avery had his own quiet stretch of time getting ready with his groomsmen. There was a first look with Kayla's dad before the bridal party gathered for more photos together, and then, finally, the moment Kayla and Avery saw each other for the first time that day. They spent some time together on the lawn in front of the farmhouse, and from there the two of them had their own portrait session, followed by family and bridal party photos scattered around the Smith Farm Gardens estate and orchard.

Avery's tuxedo deserves its own mention here. It was custom-made by Melluzzo's in Southington, Connecticut, and he spent two hours with the tailor getting every detail right, landing on something modern and beautifully fitted. Kayla wore a gown by Galia Lahav for the ceremony, with her hair worn half down, just the way Avery loves it, and soft, natural glam makeup that let her look like herself, only a little more radiant.

A ceremony at Smith Farm Gardens built around family

By mid-afternoon, once the venue photos and ceremony details were captured, Kayla and Avery exchanged vows on the lawn in front of the farmhouse, surrounded by their family and friends. It was, by every account, an emotional one. The couple wrote their own vows, and there wasn't a dry eye to be seen, which is exactly why tissues had been placed out ahead of time. Good thing, too, because every single one got used.

One of the most touching parts of the ceremony was a ring warming, a tradition where the rings are passed among parents, grandparents, and the bridal party, with each person holding them for a moment and offering a quiet blessing before they're exchanged. It's a small thing in practice, just a ring moving from hand to hand, but it means that by the time Kayla and Avery slipped the rings onto each other's fingers, they were carrying the well-wishes of everyone who mattered most to them. The ceremony closed with a receiving line, giving the couple a moment to greet every guest individually before the celebration properly began.

Blue French toile linens in the sailcloth tent

If the ceremony was about family, the reception was about atmosphere, and Kayla's mom clearly had a vision for what she wanted guests to feel the moment they stepped into the sailcloth tent. Handmade blue French toile linens covered the tables, creating a delicate, warm and inviting texture and a feeling of understated luxury. Guests wandering the back lawn and gardens during cocktail hour could look in and catch a glimpse of what was waiting for them inside the tent. A mix of long farm tables and round tables kept the space visually interesting rather than uniform, while rattan chandeliers hung above the furniture and bar setup chosen to match. At the center of it all stood a live, fifteen-foot tree wrapped in smilax, drawing the eye straight up and opening the whole tent into something that felt more spacious and luxurious than you would expect to be possible.

Personal touches to the luxurious decor

The personal touches were everywhere, and they were the kind that take real thought and care. At the entrance to the tent, antique bowls held handwritten notes for every guest, each one addressed by name with their table number on the front. Napkins were printed with love notes Kayla and Avery had written to each other. There were also personalized chocolates waiting at place settings, and in a detail that will make any dog lover smile, treats printed with a little sketch of the couple's own dog. Favors were personalized coffee scoops paired with a bag of coffee, wrapped in matching blue satin bags and set on every glass charger plate, each one finished with a name card. A gelato station and a full dessert spread rounded out the evening; no detail was left unconsidered.

Later that night, Kayla changed into a second gown by Rosie Etienne Bridal for an editorial photo session with Avery, giving the day one more beautiful chapter before the dance floor took over. Guests danced well into the evening, and by the time the night wound down, it was clear this would be a wedding that people would remember and talk about for years to come.
